Monitoring is not a single product checkbox—it is a habit: short feedback loops when something degrades, logs you can read without praying for grep, and enough structure that on-call engineers sleep occasionally. DeployDock focuses on practical observability for self-hosted Ubuntu: get to the right log file fast, see whether the service is up, and correlate changes with deploys.
Logs are the first database
Before you buy a SaaS observability suite, most incidents are solved with application logs, web server access logs, and TLS edge errors. The panel should surface those paths with context: which app, which domain, which process supervisor, and what changed recently. Admin guidance lives in View logs.
That does not replace centralized logging. It anchors it: when your aggregator is misconfigured, you can still tail the source of truth on the host.
Health checks that match reality
A process can be “up” and still useless—stuck workers, saturated connection pools, or disk full. Health checks should reflect user-visible success: HTTP 200 on a meaningful endpoint, database connectivity for APIs that need it, and queue depth where async work matters. DeployDock encourages checks that fail when the app is lying, not only when systemd restarts.
Wire this mindset into Deployment: define what “healthy” means per app, and document it beside the deploy button so the next person inherits your intent.
Metrics: start small
CPU, memory, disk, and network errors still explain a surprising share of outages. The panel can expose baseline charts without turning into a full metrics warehouse. When you outgrow host-level graphs, export or scrape into Prometheus, Grafana Cloud, or your org standard—just keep the panel links so operators can pivot from “red chart” to “which vhost” in one hop.
Tracing and APM
For latency investigations, distributed tracing and APM tools shine. DeployDock does not try to replace them; it tries to stay out of the way: document ports, environment variables, and process boundaries so agents install cleanly. Reference material includes Ports and Environment variables.
Alerting discipline
Alerts should be actionable and owned. If every deploy pages someone, people will mute channels. Start with a small set: cert renewal failures, disk thresholds, and HTTP 5xx spikes on production hostnames. Tune noise weekly until the team trusts the signal.
Security-sensitive logs
Logs often contain secrets accidentally—Authorization headers, SQL with PII, stack traces with file paths. Rotate logs, restrict access, and scrub before shipping off-host. Enterprise customers should align with internal data classification policies; see On-prem overview.
